I feel like the number one thing I do on the internet is search for awesome city guides. I'm always looking for guides that reveal a more unique, personal perspective. For me, the more intimate and the more local...the better. I feel like we can all automatically think about the main attractions associated with all big cities, so I don't need a guide to tell me what I already know. So here are my top three websites that I use when I want to know all the hidden gems a city has to offer.
Unlike City Guides
This is my favorite for the more overwhelming, big cities. The suggestions are more 'off the beaten path,' which is right up my alley. The site feels so hip and geared toward offering an experience that the typical tourist won't seek. I love the breakdown of categories especially culture and escapism. I used this for my trips to Istanbul, Warsaw, and Berlin.
12 HRS
I absolutely love the idea behind 12hrs. It's such a cute, well organized site. It really gives you the best glimpse possible for when you don't have too much time. Even with a short time span, it still offers a more unique, local guide to cities giving you the most real and authentic experience. The site is always adding new cities and their Instagram account is definitely worth a follow. I used this site for my trip to London.
Localeur
So much love for this site. It's basically like having a friend in every city telling you their favorite things to do. I've lost track of all the times I've used this for ideas of what to do on the weekend in my own city of Houston. It's awesome to get real recommendations from people who live and breathe these cities. Like I said, I use this site all the time for Houston & Austin, and I've been looking into it for planning my New York trip in April.
