Lost in Translation // Ella Frances Sanders

❝ Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going. ❞
‒Rita Mae Brown

I received a giftcard to Barnes & Noble, so I decided to take a glance at my favorite two sections: language & travel. Flipping through a few pages, I instantly loved this book. I often find myself expressing myself in another language for fun or because I think it better suits the conversation. I'm currently learning Turkish, I am pretty advanced in Spanish, and a bit of Polish creeps out every now and again. One of my favorite feelings is meeting travelers and speaking to them in their native language. I love seeing their face light up as I manage to butcher a few words, establishing an instant rapport. Learning languages helps me develop new parts to my identity and it also helps me understand different cultures a bit more.

This book is a wonderful collection and illustration of words that show the limits of only learning one language. In English I find it difficult to express how traveling makes me feel and it is hard to put into words the experiences and emotions gained. I love knowing that there are specific words in other languages for situations I can only describe in English. The two pages pictured above are my favorites from the book--both relating to travel, of course.
